New Delhi, Sept 29 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to free India from the "menace of single use plastic."

Addressing Mann Ki Baat, his monthly radio address, PM Modi said: "Not only in India, but it is a matter of pride for the entire world that as we celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, 130 crore citizens have pledged to make the country free of single use plastic."

Modi said India is now being hailed for making effort in protecting the environment.

"In the direction of environment conservation, India has taken a lead role which has inspired other countries to follow the same," said the Indian PM.

"I believe that all my countrymen will be part of the mission to make India free from single use plastic on October 2," said he.

Recently while addressing the 74th session of United Nations General Assembly in New York, Modi said: "We are making attempts to make India single use plastic-free."
