Lucknow/UNI: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati expressed grief over the suspicious death of a youth in Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj in police custody and demanded a high-level inquiry from the state government.

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati tweeted on Thursday, “Very sad and shameful death of another youth in police custody in Kasganj. The government should give strict punishment to the culprits by conducting a high-level inquiry into the incident and also helping the victim's family."

Expressing concern over the increasing cases of death in police custody, Mayawati said, "It is a matter of great concern that the UP government is failing to prevent death in the custody and in-making police the protector of the public."

Recently, after the arrest of a youth Altaf Ahmed in Kasganj for questioning by the police, the case of his death under suspicious circumstances in custody has gained political momentum. The police are calling it a case of suicide.
