Journalist Akshay Singh cremated

His cremation was held in Nigambodh Ghat.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia were among the several political leaders who attended the cremation ceremony.

Kejriwal tweeted: "Vyapam scam n all deaths so far ought to be thoroughly investigated. Guilty must be punished. Something MUST be done to prevent more deaths."

Gandhi also mourned the death of the journalist as he said: "Deeply anguished at the untimely death of journalist Akshay Singh who was investigating the Vyapam scam in MP. My condolences to his family."

Following the death of the journalist, covering the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh, State Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he has ordered a probe into the matter.

However, the CM ruled out a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)  probe stating that the High Court is already monitoring the investigation of the scam and the state government has no role in it.

Conveying his condolences to the family of the journalist, Chouhan during a press conference said: "I am full of pain. In an unfortunate incident, journalist Akshay Singh died of illness."

He said his autopsy was conducted in Gujarat and that was videographed.

"I ordered a probe into the Vyapam scam. There is no need of a CBI probe. SIT will investigate the journalist's death," said he.

Assuring the probe into the scam is fair so far, Chouhan said he will also investigate the deaths related to the scam.

"The Congress is making baseless allegations. The Madhya pradesh government is not above law," said he.

This comes after the journalist, who was covering the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh, fell ill and died in a hospital on Saturday.

Akshay Singh was working with Aaj Tak channel.

He earlier reportedly  interviewed parents of a girl Namrata Damor who was found dead near railway tracks after her name figured in the scam.

Several  people who were allegedly involved with the scam have been found dead so far.

Indore Bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court earlier served notices to MPPEB and Medical Council of India (MCI) following a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by parents of some students after reports that more than 300 ineligible candidates managed to get into the merit list.
