J&K: Khurram Parvez released

| | Dec 01, 2016, at 12:38 am
Jammu, Nov 30 (IBNS): Prominent Kashmiri Human Rights Activist Khurram Parvez was released on Wednesday from the Joint Interrogation Centre.

He was released after spending 76 days in prison.

He was detained under the Public Safety Act from his Srinagar house on Sept 15.

“He is in good health and spirits. He expresses his overwhelming gratitude to the local and international solidarity campaign for his
release,” the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society said in a statement.

Parvez is the programme coordinator of Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society and the chairperson of Asian Federation Against involuntary Disappearances.

Parvez’s release comes five days after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court had declared his detention illegal and said that the “detaining
authority had abused its powers”.

On Nov 25, the court had ordered the state government to release Parvez.

"I am happy to be back amongst my family and friends. I am deeply touched by the love and solidarity expressed by so many friends from
across the world. This 76 day detention was a difficult time for me, my family and colleagues. Difficult times are also opportunities, if
only we make them so," Khurram Parvez wrote on his Facebook page soon after release.

"I commit myself to not let this detention be a hard memory of my life but an opportunity that has enabled me to reflect, read and plan my
future work for justice and peace. I wont let this difficulty make me bitter, instead my resolve for peace and justice has got strengthened," he said.

The activist is scheduled to reach Srinagar on Thursday
