New Delhi, July 22 (IBNS): Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday informed the Rajya Sabha that the Jio Institute had not been granted the Institution of Eminence status and as only a Letter of Intent had been issued.

Javadekar made the statement during the Question Hour in the Upper House when several members sought clarity on the criteria of selection for the prestigious title.

Javadekar informed that a committee of experts had made the selections after a thorough scrutiny.

He also clarified to the House that the Jio Institute has not been granted the  'Institution of Eminence' status.

The Jio Institute has only been recommended by a panel for a letter of intent, which will be subjected to certain conditions, the Minister stated.

Six higher education institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, the Indian Institutes of Technology at Mumbai and Delhi, and the proposed Jio Institute of the Reliance Foundation were selected as Institutions of Eminence.
