Jharkhand’s political scene set for major shake-up as Hemant Soren explores alliance with BJP: Reports

Jharkhand may be headed for a dramatic political upheaval amid strong indications that Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) are considering a surprise realignment with their long-time rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), media reports said.

The buzz follows reports of high-level backchannel negotiations in Delhi, hinting at the possibility of the JMM joining the NDA.

The speculation intensified after Hemant Soren and his wife, Kalpana Soren, reportedly met a senior BJP leader in the national capital.

The meeting, revealed by multiple media outlets, comes just days after the Mahagathbandhan’s crushing defeat in Bihar, a loss that appears to have triggered political tremors in neighbouring Jharkhand.

Adding to the intrigue, several reports quoting Congress and JMM insiders claim that eight of Congress’s 16 MLAs are in talks to break ranks and back a new Soren-led arrangement with outside support from the BJP.

According to The Sunday Guardian, senior Congress leaders privately admit that discussions are underway and that the picture “will become clearer within two days”.

However, for a legally valid split under the anti-defection law, at least 11 Congress MLAs would need to defect together. The final call would rest with Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahto — himself a JMM leader.

If the realignment takes shape, the numbers stack up comfortably in Soren’s favour. In the 82-member Assembly, the JMM has 34 seats, and the BJP holds 21.

Together with MLAs from the LJP, AJSU, and JD(U), the tally could rise to 58, well above the 41 required for a majority.

The current JMM-led alliance with Congress, the RJD, and the Left holds 56 seats, but internal fissures have grown increasingly visible in recent months.

Reports suggest two key factors are driving the rethink within the JMM camp: the prospect of smoother relations with the Centre, which could fast-track pending development projects, and concerns over ongoing Enforcement Directorate investigations involving Hemant Soren.

A proposed Bill currently under scrutiny by a Joint Parliamentary Committee mandates that a Chief Minister or Prime Minister must step down on the 31st day of arrest, a clause that has reportedly heightened Soren’s urgency to secure political insulation.

Another element adding heat to the speculation is the Centre’s reported move to award the Bharat Ratna next year to Shibu Soren, JMM founder and former Chief Minister, who died in August. Many in the JMM see this as an overture from the BJP, perhaps signalling a new political opening.

Meanwhile, Hindi media outlets in Jharkhand have gone further, claiming that a preliminary agreement between the JMM and the BJP is already in place and that the Delhi meeting was anything but routine.

A source quoted by Navbharat Times said that if the two sides come together, it would mark “one of the most unexpected political shifts in recent Indian history”, given the acrimony between them during the 2024 Lok Sabha campaign.

All three major players — the JMM, Congress and BJP — have so far maintained silence. But with fast-moving developments, reports of defections, and strategic arithmetic favouring a new coalition, political watchers believe Jharkhand may be on the cusp of a major realignment.

Whether Hemant Soren ultimately walks out of the INDIA bloc and into the NDA remains to be seen, but the signals suggest that the state’s political script is being rapidly rewritten.
