It was a mistake: Rahul Gandhi on 1975 emergency

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has said the emergency declared by late PM Indira Gandhi from 1975 to 1977 was a 'mistake'.

Rahul Gandhi said what happened during that period was 'wrong'.

He made the comment during a conversation with  renowned economist Kaushik Basu.

The event was organized by Cornell University.

"I think that was a mistake. Absolutely, that was a mistake. And my grandmother (Mrs Gandhi) said as much," Rahul Gandhi said.

He said the 'emergency' was fundamentally different from the current situation.

"The Congress at no point attempted to capture India's institutional framework. Our design does not allow us to do," he said.

Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency on June 25, 1975, on account of international disturbances, suspending key fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution to every citizen.
