iPhone EMI pressure leads to tragedy: Indian teenager, parents die after falling from Maharashtra hill

An Indian teenager managed to buy an iPhone but failed to pay the EMI, leading to a fight with family members and eventually to their deaths in  Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

Police said the teen tried to commit suicide by falling from a hill following the fight. When his family members tried to stop him from taking his own life, both his parents fell to their deaths while trying to calm him down.

The deceased family members were identified as 19-year-old Kunal Chandgude, father Murlidhar Chandgude, 48, and mother Sangita.

The incident occurred at Khawadya Hill in the Tisgaon area.

Police said a heated argument occurred between Kunal and his father, who worked as a driver, when the teen demanded money to pay the latest monthly instalment for the phone. The parents reportedly refused to pay the EMI.

After the argument, the boy went up the hill to take his own life.

His parents rushed behind and tried to pursuade his son to return home.

According to reports,  local villagers, police teams, and fire brigade personnel soon followed them and went up the hill after being alerted and launched a joint effort to bring the teenager to safety.

Firefighters attempted to deploy a safety net below the cliff, but the rescue operation was hampered as Kunal repeatedly moved along the edge of the hill, making it difficult for the team to safely approach him, reported The New Indian Express.

The father reportedly tried to calm down his child and approached him when the teen subsequently went over the edge.

The father and the son slipped and plunged down the steep slope, ending the episode in a tragedy.

According to reports, the mother soon decided to end her life by jumping off the cliff.

The three bodies were later recovered, and an investigation is currently underway.
