Police have arrested four suspects in connection with the alleged gangrape and murder of a Dalit woman in Hokrani village of Karnataka’s Raichur district, media reports said.

Superintendent of Police Arunangshu Giri confirmed the arrests, stating that all four suspects are currently being interrogated, The Hindu reported.

According to the police complaint, the woman was allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered by four individuals before her body was dumped in an open well on August 19.

The victim’s father lodged a complaint with the police, following which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

The incident has triggered widespread outrage, with several Dalit organisations demanding a thorough investigation into the alleged crime.

According to the FIR, the woman had gone to a field to relieve herself but never returned home. Her mother later went searching for her and found only her slippers and a water vessel in the field.

On August 20, the family was informed that a body had been found in a nearby well. They reached the spot and identified the deceased as the missing woman.

The exact circumstances surrounding her death are currently under investigation, police said.

The woman had reportedly been engaged about a month before the incident.
