New Delhi, Sept 24 (IBNS): The Indian Navy on Sunday said injured commander Abhilash Tomy will be rescued by French vessel Osiris in next 16 hours, media reports said.

The tweet came two days after the commander had injured his back.

Tomy is representing India in the Golden Global Race 2018.

The Indian Navy tweeted on Sunday, "@abhilashtomy shall be picked up in next 16 hrs by french vessel Osiris. Thereafter likely to R/V @Australian_Navy HMAS Ballarat, which has left Perth to bring him. Earliest arrival of our ship #INSSatpura in current location later @DefenceMinIndia
@nsitharaman @ggr2018official"

Earlier on the same day, the Navy had tweeted, "Situation being closely monitored at Naval Headquarters New Delhi & Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Melbourne Australia. @Australian_Navy frigate HMAS Ballarat enroute to Tomy. INS Satpura & INS Jyoti moving at top speed to effect Rendezvous with Tomy. We are at it."

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also tweeted to say, "Spoke to VCNS VAdm Ajit Kumar P, AVSM, VSM regarding the condition of injured navy officer @abhilashtomy. The Rescue Mission is being coordinated with the Australian Navy.The injured officer shall be picked up in the next 16 hrs by a French vessel Osiris."

A Pi8 aircraft, which was dispatched by the Navy from Port Luis Mauritius, has managed to establish contact with Commander Tomy's 'Thuria', which is an indigenously built vessel, The Indian Express reported.

The Navy has been quoted by The Indian Express as saying, "The capability of our P8i has been a humongous force multiplier who has given us and the Australian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) a huge input into the state of Thuriya for planning purposes. Indian Naval Defence Attache’ in Australia is camping in regional MRCC."

The race had begun in July this year in France.

An Indian Navy spokesperson also told The Indian Express the mast of Tomy's vessel was broken and was seen hanging on the side.
