India taking necessary steps to ensure Kulbhushan Jadhav's safety: MEA
New Delhi/IBNS: The Ministry of External Affairs has assured that India is taking all suitable steps in ensuring the safety of Indian Navy officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who has been sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on alleged charges of spying.
During a virtual media briefing, MEA spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said: "We are in touch with Pakistan through diplomatic channels. Our government is taking all possible steps to ensure the safety of Kulbhushan Jadhav."
The Islamabad High Court last month had said Indian officials should be provided with another chance to appoint a lawyer for Kulbhushan Jadhav.
The decision came after India had accused Pakistan of blocking all chances of legal remedy for Jadhav.
Earlier Pakistan had placed the International Court of Justice (Review and Reconsideration) Ordinance, 2020, in Parliament for approval.
The ordinance, according to the Pakistani media report, will have an overriding effect as its provisions shall have effect notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in any law for the time being in force, including the Pakistan Army Act 1952.
The External Affairs Ministry of India had said the inadequacies and shortcomings in the said ordinance had been already conveyed to Pakistani authorities in June 2020, including a considerable delay in informing India about its promulgation.
