India launches Integrated State and City Logistics Plans to boost efficiency

The Indian government recently launched a series of transformative initiatives by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and creating a future-ready, globally competitive logistics ecosystem in the country.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal unveiled the measures on September 20, marking 10 years of the “Make in India” campaign.

As part of the programme, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has introduced Integrated State and City Logistics Plans under the Strengthening Multimodal and Integrated Logistics Ecosystem (SMILE) programme, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The initiative will initially cover eight cities across eight states.

According to the Ministry, the plans will help assess existing logistics infrastructure, identify gaps, and provide a roadmap for reducing costs and improving efficiency. The exercise will later be expanded nationwide.

The measures are aligned with the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, which aim to modernise logistics infrastructure and build supply chain resilience. Several states have also framed their own logistics policies and action plans in line with national objectives.

DPIIT said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating a future-ready and globally competitive logistics sector.
