New York/IBNS: On expected lines, India was elected unopposed as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for a term of two years. It won 184 votes in the 193-member General Assembly.

Ireland, Mexico and Norway are the other nations that won the Security Council elections on Wednesday.

It was given that India will grab a seat from the Asia-Pacific category for the 2021-22 term.

With this election for the eighth term, India will try to use the opportunity to further bolster its claim for permanent membership in the Security Council which it has been pushing for years.
