Vishnu Remark
I respect all religions: CJI BR Gavai clarifies his remark on Lord Vishnu's idol in Khajuraho
New Delhi/IBNS: Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has clarified his remark on Lord Vishnu idol in Khajuraho after the comment he passed in the courtroom triggered outrage, media reports said.
"Someone told me the other day that the comments I made have been portrayed in social media in a certain manner...I respect all religions," CJI Gavai said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
Days ago, CJI Gavai-led bench dismissed a plea that sought the re-construction of a seven-foot idol of Lord Vishnu at the Javari Temple in Khajuraho.
While hearing the petition, the CJI controversially said as quoted by the daily, "This is purely publicity interest litigation. Go and ask the deity himself to do something. If you are saying that you are a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu, then you pray and do some meditation."
In a clarification, CJI Gavai said the issue falls under the Archaeological Survey of India.
The Hindu organisations protested against his remark and accused the CJI of mocking their beliefs.
The call for his impeachment also gained pace on social media.
Several advocates had written to the CJI urging him to withdraw the remark, which had triggered widespread criticism.
