Port Blair/UNI: Keeping in view the requirement of remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the administration of the union territory has decided to recommence the helicopter services between scattered islands from tomorrow.

The helicopter services were restricted considering the threat of spread of COVID-19 in the remote islands but now considering the growing
demands of fast transportation, the service will be resumed.

As per new SOP, all passengers intending to travel to destinations in Nicobar District have to undergo RT-PCR Test prior to their journey and only those passengers tested negative will be allowed to travel.

Besides, passengers travelling to Little Andaman, Mayabunder and Diglipur shall also undergo Rapid Antigen Test for COVID-19 and only those tested negative will be allowed to travel.

“The Rapid Antigen Test will be conducted on payment of Rs. 500/- per person which will be borne by the individual passenger except Government Servants on official duty and Medical patient along with an attendant,” officials said.

Helicopter service is crucial for remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands because in certain Islands, a helicopter can reach a destination in two hours while it might take nearly two days on a ship.

Andaman and Nicobar Administration operates helicopter services in Andaman through Pawan Hans Helicopter Services and is considered the life line for the remote Nicobar Group of Islands, for which no road network exists.
