New Delhi/UNI: Former Congress leader Yoganand Shastri on Wednesday joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in presence of party president Sharad Pawar.

Shastri, a former Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, had quit the Congress in Jan 2020 alleging that tickets were being sold.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar said there was a need to give people an alternative to BJP.

"The way communal powers are growing in the BJP regime, it is affecting social peace. People need an alternative force... We will talk to like minded parties and start the procedure," he said.

The NCP is a part of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra with Congress and Shiv Sena.

Shastri was the Speaker of Delhi Assembly between 2008 and 2013.
