Ex-CJI P Sathasivam appointed as new Kerala Guv

New Delhi, Sept 3 (IBNS): The Narendra Modi government on Wednesday appointed former Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam as the Governor of Kerala.

"The President has been pleased to appoint Shri Justice (Retd.) Palaniswamy Sathasivam, to be the Governor of Kerala with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office vice Smt. Sheila Dikshit," a government statement said.

Sathasivam retired as the CJI in April this year.

He is the first former CJI to be appointed as governor of a state.

His appointment was, however, objected by 117 members of the Kerala High Court Advocates Association, who had moved a resolution requesting the President to discard the Home Ministry's recommendation to appoint Sathasivam as the Governor, reports said.

They reportedly said that such a move will affect the independence of the judiciary.

Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the resignation of Sheila Dikshit as Governor of Kerala.

Sheila Dikshit, on Aug 26, confirmed that she has resigned as the Governor of Kerala.

The new BJP led government changed governors of several states appointed by the previous UPA regime.
