New Delhi/UNI: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday spoke with newly-appointed Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and said he looks forward to building a close working relationship.

In a tweet, the EAM said their talks covered the bilateral cooperation, Indo-Pacific, Afghanistan, Myanmar and travel facilitation.

“Great pleasure to speak to Foreign Minister @hayashi09615064 of Japan. Look forward to building a close working relationship. Our discussions today covered our bilateral cooperation, Indo-Pacific, Afghanistan, Myanmar and travel facilitation.” he posted.

Hayashi was appointed the new Foreign Minister two weeks ago.

The talks come more than a month after Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with new Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to congratulate him on assuming charge as the Prime Minister of Japan.

During the telephone talks between the two prime ministers, the two sides had discussed on strengthening the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership and to enhance cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Amid increased focus on the Indo-Pacific region, Japan is to host a meeting of the QUAD group next year. White House coordinator for the Indo-Pacific Kurt Campbell said this on Friday while speaking at an event of the US Institute of Peace.
