Does Amit Shah's parents have citizenship documents: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata, Aug 14 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday targeted the Centre again over the National Citizens' Register of Assam. She even asked if Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah's parents have citizenship documents.

Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Banerjee said, “They are being harassed by the Assam government and several people are already in detention camps."

She asked if the NRC process was peaceful, then why 400 companies of security forces are being stationed in Assam.

"BJP leaders are thumping their chest to justify this NRC,” the West Bengal CM said.

Targeting BJP president Amit Shah, Banerjee said, “I would like to ask Amit Shah whether he has citizenship documents of his father and mother."

She said back in those days, very few people used to have these documents.

"If tomorrow, Mahatma Gandhi’s family members fail to show his citizenship documents, then should we presume that he was not an Indian? BJP is dividing people for their vested political interests," said the WB CM.

Taking dig at the government, she further said, “Even cows should make their birth certificates, else they will also be asked to leave one day.”

Earlier, Amit Shah in his Kolkata rally had said: "We are not anti-Bengal. We are anti-Mamata and anti-TMC. I have come here to tell the people of Bengal what is NRC (National Register of Citizens) on which she opposed us. NRC is about evicting illegal immigrants from Bangladesh in Assam. Should we not evict illegal immigrants from Bangladesh. You cannot stop us on NRC. We will finish it lawfully in Assam."
