Delhi violence: PM Modi appeals to people to 'maintain peace and brotherhood'

Modi tweeted, "Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy."

He added, "Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest."

The north-east Delhi was on boil for last two days, when US President Donald Trump was incidentally in the national capital, over a fight between the supporters and protestors of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

189 people have been injured.

Earlier at a press conference, Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi trained her guns at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre demanding resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Following a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Gandhi said, "Considering the whole situation, the CWC believes that the central government, specially the Home Minister, is responsible for the violence. The Home Minister must resign taking the responsibility of the violence.

The Delhi government has also failed in maintaining peace and harmony. It is also responsible for the violence."

Slamming BJP leader Kapil Mishra, who was caught threatening Delhi police, the Congress Lok Sabha MP said, "There is a well-thought out conspiracy behind the violence. The conspiracy was evident during the Delhi assembly elections. Several BJP leaders had created the atmosphere of fear and hatred by making provocative statements. Recently a BJP leader had also given ultimatum to Delhi police.
