Congress welcomes SC order to de-criminalise politics, trains guns at BJP

New Delhi/UNI: While welcoming the Supreme Court’s decision to ‘de-criminalise’ Indian politics, the Congress on Thursday trained guns at the BJP and alleged that the saffron party has become a shelter or rather a comfort home for people with criminal antecedents.

“Modi ji and BJP again come to the rescue of 'Bellary Gang'! Supreme Court says give reasons for giving tickets to tainted Netas or contempt! Modiji says make tainted Netas not MLA's alone but Ministers of the Ministry, which has been allegedly looted! Will Supreme Court issue contempt of Prime Minister and Karnataka Chief Minister?”, tweeted Congress communication in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala.

The Congress spokesperson responded with a news report that Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa appointed Anand Singh, an accused of mining and forest cases, as Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology in the state.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court directed political parties to upload the details of pending cases against candidates, who are contesting polls, in the newspapers, social media platforms and their websites.

The Court had also said that the political parties will face contempt if they fail to comply with the order and asked the Election Commission to file contempt petition in the apex court, in such cases.

“The Supreme Court has given a historic verdict today to decriminalise politics. It is an important step towards decriminalising politics”, said AICC spokesperson Jaiveer Shergil, while addressing mediapersons at party headquarters.

Shergill further said that the apex court verdict is a vindication of former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s fight against criminalisaton of politics and his stand to make politics free from crime and criminals.

Shergill also took on the BJP and said that “on the day that this historic judgement has come, BJP has appointed Anand Singh as Minister in Karnataka, despite there being 15 cases of corruption against him” .

“The appointment of Anand Singh by the BJP is a commitment to bring the Bellary gang into the administration”, he charged and added that “the appoint of him is stamp of approval on the Bellary mining scams going on in Karnataka by none other than the Prime Minister of the country and the Chief Minister of Karnataka”.

“The Prime Minister is in violation of the directive of the Supreme Court to not induct any Minister facing serious charges of crime and having faced charge sheet”, Mr Shergill said.

He further said according to a report by a ‘reputed organisation’, 42 per cent of BJP candidates have criminal case pending against them.

“106 MPs have cases of serious crime-murder, kidnapping etc pending against them. 92 of these MPs are from the BJP”, he alleged and added that “55 per cent of BJP MPs have cases of serious nature pending against them. Some BJP MPs have also cases of crime against women .'

The Congress spokesperson further said that after Delhi assembly polls, among new BJP MLAs, 64 per cent of BJP MLAs (5/8) have criminal cases registered against them.
