Congress, AAP demand Smriti Irani's resignation

New Delhi, June 24 (IBNS): The Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday demanded Union Minister Smriti Irani's resignation, hours after a Delhi court decided to examine the validity of a complaint that she misrepresented her qualifications.

Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Ajay Maken said: "We will fight for the resignation of Smriti Irani on the streets and in the Parliament."

He said: "Tomorrow, we will hold a huge protest at 12:00 PM against Smriti Irani at Jantar Mantar and we will demand her resignation there."

Demanding for action against Irani, AAP leader Ashutosh tweeted: "Delhi Police should arrest Smriti Irani as she is a cabinet minister and can tamper with evidences as police claimed in Tomar case."

"Court has taken cognisance of Smriti Irani case. Will Delhi police arrest her as it did with Tomar and will MODI asks her to resign ?" he said.

The court has fixed the next hearing in the case concerning Irani on Aug 28.

The case against the youngest member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet was fled by a freelance writer Ahmer Khan.

It has been alleged that Irani  has made contradictory claims about her college education in documents filed in different years with the Election Commission.

According to the complaint Irani had said that she completed her BA in 1996  in a long-distance or correspondence program from Delhi University.

But last year she allegedly said that she had completed a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from the  School of Open Learning, Delhi University.

Activists of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the student outfit of the Congress, protested against Irani and demanded her resignation in New Delhi.
