Coal scam case: CBI quizzes Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee's wife Rujira Naroola

Kolkata/IBNS: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday quizzed Trinamool Congress MP and West Bengal Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee's wife Rujira Naroola in connection with the coal scam case.

The CBI officers, who arrived at Abhishek's residence Shantiniketan in south Kolkata at around 11:35 am, left the house after around 1.5 hours.

The officers will analyse Rujira's answers at Nizam Palace. The entire quizzing has been video recorded, local reports said.

Just minutes before the arrival of the CBI officials, Mamata Banerjee had reached Abhishek's residence and stayed there for around nine-ten minutes.

The investigating officers reached Abhishek's residence three-four minutes after Mamata Banerjee left for her office Nabanna.

Earlier on Sunday, a CBI team visited Abhishek's residence in south Kolkata's Kalighat area and served a notice to his wife under CrPC section 160 (attendance of witness) where she had been asked to appear before the investigating officers as a witness for interrogation.

Responding to the notice, Rujira on Monday informed the central probe agency that she will be available for the interrogation between 11 am and 3 pm on Tuesday (Feb 23).

Menoka Gambhir, the sister-in-law of Abhishek, was quizzed by the CBI sleuths at her Kolkata residence.

While the BJP has asked for a fair trial so that the "truth" comes out, Abhishek issued a strong statement alleging vendetta politics.

Abhishek tweeted, "At 2pm today, the CBI served a notice in the name of my wife. We have full faith in the law of the land. However, if they think they can use these ploys to intimidate us, they are mistaken. We are not the ones who would ever be cowed down."

In a similar situation months before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mamata Banerjee had sat on a dharna in downtown Kolkata when CBI officials had tried to interrogate former Kolkata Police Commission Rajib Kumar in connection with the probe into Saradha chit fund scam.
