Chinese President Xi Jinping reaches India for informal meeting with PM Modi

Chennai: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived here on Friday to hold his second informal meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Xi Jinping was received at the Chennai airport by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister E Palaniswamy.

Modi will host a dinner for Xi Jinping on Friday night.

In this meeting in Tamil Nadu, no agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed.

"The forthcoming Chennai Informal Summit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to continue their discussions on overarching issues of bilateral, regional and global importance and to exchange views on deepening India-China Closer Development Partnership," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

The meeting will take place in the backdrop of the strained relationship between India and Pakistan over the abrogation of Article 370 which withdrew Jammu and Kashmir's special status.

Though Pakistan has tried to internationalise the Kashmir issue, India maintained the abrogation of Article 370 is its internal matter.

China has recently said the dispute over Kashmir should be resolved by New Delhi and Islamabad.

The two leaders had their inaugural Informal Summit in Wuhan, China on Apr 27-28.
