China praises PM Modi's letter of solidarity and help, says it 'fully demonstrated' friendship

Beijing/IBNS: China on Monday praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's letter to President Xi Jinping offering solidarity and help to deal with the coronavirus outbreak which has claimed hundreds of lives and infected several thousand.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping had expressed solidarity with China in its fight against the deadly virus and condoled the death of those who had succumbed to the infection. The Prime Minister had also offered assistance to fight the outbreak.

In response to the letter, China said it "fully demonstrated" New Delhi's friendship with Beijing.

"We thank and appreciate India's support for China's fight against the NCP Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia, the official name for coronavirus," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

"India's acts of goodwill fully demonstrate its friendship with China," Mr Geng said during an online media briefing to a question on PM Modi's letter to President Jinping.

The Prime Minister also appreciated President Xi Jinping for facilitating the evacuation of 650 Indian citizens last week from virus-stricken Wuhan city, the epicenter of coronavirus outbreak.

"We stand ready to work with India and other members of the international community to jointly tackle fight the epidemic and safeguard regional and global public health security," Mr Geng said.

Indian Ambassador to China Vikram Misri told media he is in touch with Chinese officials to learn the immediate requirement to deal with the outbreak.

Till now 97 new cases of coronavirus infection have surfaced and 908 people have died from the infection. The worst-affected Hubei province and the confirmed cases of infection crossed 40,000.

Meanwhile, a team of the World Health Organisation(WHO) has arrived in China to control the outbreak.

"I've just been at the airport seeing off members of an advance team for the @WHO-led 2019nCoV international expert mission to China, led by Dr Bruce Aylward, veteran of past public health emergencies," WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a tweet.
