Chetan Chauhan, former cricketer, to head national fashion institute

New Delhi, Jun 18 (IBNS): Union government appointed former Indian cricketer and two-time Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker as the Chairperson of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), media reported on Saturday.
Chetan Chauhan, 68, is also the vice-president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).

But the appointment has met with wide-spread criticism, even drawing mirth on digital media, especially Twitter.

Chauhan confirmed his appointment but said he will talk about it after taking charge on Monday, NDTV reported.

The Indian Express quoted Chauhan as saying he got the job at the fashion institute because of his cricketing and banking experience.

Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani tweeted, "Chetan Chauhan, the ex-cricketer, is now heading the National Institute of Fashion Technology! I'm just amazed!"

Tweeted journalist Rahul Kanwal, "Who makes decisions like appointing Chetan Chauhan chief of NIFT? What's in their mind while taking such a decision? Unfair to Chetan too.

NIFT was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. NIFT has been granted statutory status under the act of Parliament of India in 2006, empowering the Institute to award degrees and other academic distinctions.

DDCA and its Vice-President Chetan Chauhan had filed a criminal defamation complaint in February 2016 against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and suspended BJP MP Kirti Azad for allegedly defaming the cricketing body
