Bengal: BJP's Bhabanipur bypoll candidate Priyanka Tibrewal files nomination

Kolkata/IBNS: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from West Bengal's Bhabanipur constituency, where bypoll is due on Sept 30, Priyanka Tibrewal, Monday filed her nomination at Alipore Survey Building here.

Tibrewal, an advocate and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) vice president, was accompanied by BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari, who had defeated Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate from Bhabanipur, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in Nandigram during assembly elections last summer.

The bypoll in the seat was necessitated following the resignation of West Bengal Minister and TMC leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.

Chattopadhyay resigned to pave the way for Banerjee to contest and get elected to the assembly.

Though the Nandigram result was challenged by Banerjee in the court, she has plunged into election again to remain in the Chief Minister's post.

The Congress, which had contested the 2021 assembly polls in an alliance with the Left, has decided not to field a candidate against Banerjee, whose equation with the grand old party has shown signs of improvement of late in the runup to the 2024 General Elections.

The Left has fielded advocate Srijib Biswas to take on Banerjee.

The bypoll result will be declared on Oct 3.
