Assam government issues notice to set up 200 additional FTs

Guwahati, Sep 27 (IBNS): The Assam government has notified setting up 200 additional Foreigners Tribunals in 33 districts of the state.

The state government on Sept 23 had issued a notification to establish 200 appellate Foreigners Tribunals for hearing of appeals of those persons excluded from the final Nationals Register of Citizens (NRC) which was published on Aug 31.

The notification stated that a references to be made by Deputy Commissioners from the date of functioning in the state to act as such within their respective jurisdiction.

Over 19 lakh people were excluded from the final NRC.

There are 100 Foreigners Tribunals now functioning in the state.

According to the government notification, 15 numbers new Foreigners Tribunals will be established each in Kamrup (Metro) and Nagaon district, 11 in Hojai district, 10 in Darrang, 9 each in Cachar and Tinsukia, 8 each in Dhubri, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Kamrup (Rural), Karimganj, Morigaon, Sonitpur, 7 each in Barpeta, Jorhat and Lakhimpur, 6 in Baksa, 5 each in Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Golaghat, Kokrajhar, 4 each in Karbi Anglong, Udalguri, 3 each in Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, 2 each in Chirang, Nalbari, South Salmara, West Karbi Anglong and one each in Charaideo, Dima Hasao, Majuli.

Recently, the state government has appointed 221 members of Foreigners Tribunals including 21 members for existing Foreigners Tribunals.
