Assam flood situation improves, 10.75 lakh people of 18 districts still affect, death toll rises to 37
Guwahati/IBNS: The flood situation in Assam has gradually improved as the water level of all major rivers is decreasing.
But over 10.75 lakh people of 18 districts are still affected in the current floods.
Last three-day sunshine has given some relief to the people of Assam and also reducing the water level of all major rivers in the state.
Two people drowned in flood waters in Morigaon and Tinsukia district on Friday taking the death toll to 37.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person drowned in flood waters at Mayong area in Morigaon district while another person drowned at Doomdooma area in Tinsukia district.
On the other hand, nearly 10.75 lakh people of 1412 villages in 18 districts – Dhemaji, Biswanath, Chirang, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia-are still affected in the second wave of flood.
Out of the total affected people, over 6.32 lakh people have been affected alone in Barpeta district followed by 1.95 lakh people in South Salmara, 84,000 people in Goalpara, 37,700 people in Dhubri, 35,000 people in Morigaon district.
The ASDMA report said that around 53,348 hectares of croplands are still under floodwaters.
A total of 6531 people have taken shelter at 171 relief camps set up by the administration in eight districts.
On Friday, the district administration rescued 1046 persons from the flood-affected areas of Barpeta, Dhubri and South Salmara districts.
The floodwaters are also receding in Kaziranga National Park, Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Orang National Park, Manas National park.
