Assam: AASU and 28 others organisations take out protest rally against Citizenship Ammendment Bill, 2016
Guwahati, June 29 (IBNS): The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and 28 other organisations, representing various ethnic and tribal communities , on Friday took out a protest rally against the Citizenship (Ammendment) Bill, 2016 in Guwahati.
Thousands of people, leaders, workers of the organisations participated in the rally.
The rally was taken out from Latasil playground to Assam Engineering Institute field at Chandmari in the capital city of Assam.
Apart from the students organisations and few ethnic and tribal groups, prominent artists, singer took part in the protest rally.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 proposed to grant citizenship to illegal migrants belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who entered India upto Dec 31, 2014.
Top leaders of the students group said the Centre and the Assam government will face massive protests in coming days if the bill is not withdrawn.
All Assam Students Union (AASU) Advisor Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said Assam is not a dumping ground for illegal Bangladeshis. Assam Accord was signed after six years long Assam agitation (Assam movement).
“According to the Assam Accord, those had entered before 1971, he may be hindu, he may be muslim they can staying in Assam with citizenship right. But those have entered after 1971, he may be hindu, he may be muslim, all illegal Bangladeshis should be deported. There will not be any compromised because Assam has already taken a huge burden upto 1971. Assam is a small state and we cann’t load beyond 1971,” Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said.
