Article 35-A: Kashmir shuts on Hurriyat Call

| | Aug 12, 2017, at 10:09 pm
Srinagar, Aug 12 (IBNS): On call of joint resistance leadership , a complete shutdown is being observed in the Kashmir Valley against a plea in the Supreme Court seeking abrogation of Article 35-A which confers special rights on J&K’s permanent residents.

According to reports, all shops and other business establishments are closed while traffic is off the roads across the Valley.

Rail services have been suspended while exams where postponed in wake of the call for a strike.

Authorities imposed restrictions on the movement of people in five police station areas -- Maharajgunj, Nowhatta, Khanyar, Nowhatta and Rainawari, apprehending violent protests.

The call for shutdown was issued by Joint Resistance Leadership against “assault” on state’s special status and “efforts” to abrogate Article 35-A.

They said the plea against Article 35A was part of plans to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir, which is a Muslim majority state.

Article 35A of the Constitution defines the residency laws in Jammu and Kashmir and bars outsiders from buying any immovable property or applying for jobs in the state government.
