Srinagar, May 6 (IBNS) An army soldier was killed in an encounter near Line of Control (LoC) in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday.

Official sources said that Army’s 21 KAMAW guarding the Gujer Dori area near LoC in the sector detected some suspicious movement during wee hours on Friday.

When the forces challenged the infiltrators, they started firing, ensuing fierce gunbattle in which an army soldier, Sepoy Ramesh Chand Yadav was injured.

Srinagar based defence ministry official, while confirming the incident,  said that an army jawan sustained serious bullet injuries in a gunfight with infiltrators  near LoC while foiling an infiltration bid.

The gunfight triggered after the alert men noticed suspicious movement and challenged the group of infiltrators trying to sneak inside, the official said.

The injured soldier was immediately airlifted to army's 92 base hospital for treatment.

He succumbed to injuries, the official said.

The search operation in the area is still going on.
