Agitated villagers kill leopard in Assam’s Sivasagar district
Guwahati, Aug 23 (IBNS): Agitated villagers killed a leopard in upper Assam’s Sivasagar district after it attacked and injured two persons.
The incident took place at Ligiri Pukhuri area near Nazira in the oil rich upper Assam district on Wednesday.
According to the reports, the leopard entered in the area on Wednesday morning and attacked two people.
After the incident, an agitated mob came out with lathi and other sharp weapons and started searching the leopard.
The agitated villagers spotted the leopard near a jungle area and mercilessly beat it to death.
Meanwhile, the forest department has registered a case in connection with the incident.
Assam forest minister Parimal Suklabaidya said that, man-animal conflict has been rising in the state due to shrinking of forest cover.
“Wild animals come from the forest area and enter human habitats in search of food. The state forest department has taken adequate measures to stop the man-animal conflicts in the state,” Suklabaidya said.
At least 10 leopards were killed by villagers across the state in this year so far.
