New Delhi/UNI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi Thursday said her party's Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has already apologised for his comments on President Droupadi Murmu, amid a controversy over remarks made by the politician a day ago.

The Congress president's comments came shortly after Union Minister Smriti Irani raised the issue in Lok Sabha, and the House was adjourned.

Chowdhury meanwhile said that the comment he made was a "slip of tongue, and a mistake", and accused the BJP of blowing the issue out of proportion.

"We have immense respect for the President. It was a slip of tongue, as we were protesting at Vijay Chowk, some media persons were asking questions, I used the term just once," Chowdhury said.

The Congress leader had referred to the President at 'Rashtrapatni' irking the ruling party members and drawing criticism.
