9 Army jawans washed away in J&K flood fury
Jammu, Sept 6 (IBNS): Nine Army jawans are reported to have been washed away while carrying rescue operations in the flood-hit state of Jammu & Kashmir, even as Union Home Minister arrived in the state to take stock of the situation that turned grim.
According to an NDTV report, 9 Army jawans were washed away when their boat capsized in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.
Army sources said, the jawans were going to rescue stranded people.
Now, efforts are on to rescue them.
The flood crisis J&K is deepening further with fresh reports of river breach coming from the state.
Till now, the death toll has already crossed 100-mark and rising.
As per latest reports, nearly 10,000 more were stranded across the state.
Local administration has sounded a red alert in south Srinagar, the region that is witnessing its worst flood in nearly six decades.
The flood has hit almost all 10 districts in the Jammu region.
River Jhelum breaches embankment in Pulwama, said reports.
The overall situation is very grave; media quoted Srinagar’s Divisional Commissioner as saying.
It has been learn that, Jammu-Pathankot highway blocked due to incessant rains, vehicular traffic stopped.
Jammu's Tawi river is flowing over the danger level.
Three bridges have been closed for traffic to ensure safety.
The local administration, state police, army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are battling against time in rescuing the people.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Srinagar this morning and held a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to take stock of the situation.
After briefing the Home Minister, Abdullah drove Singh through Srinagar city.
The Home Minister is expected to conduct an aerial survey of the flood affected areas like Poonch, Rajouri and Anantnag districts.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sanctioned Rs. 2 lakh for the family of those killed in rain-related incidents and Rs. 50,000 for the seriously injured in the flood-hit belts of Jammu and Kashmir.
