Kolkata/IBNS: The West Bengal government on Thursday said 87.6% of Covid-19 fatalities in the state are due to comorbidities, at a time the eastern part of the country is witnessing a massive surge in Novel Coronavirus cases.

In presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Secretary Rajiva Sinha said, "Only 2.2% of Covid patients have died so far. Even out of 2.2%, 87.6% of them had comorbidities."

Sinha during a press conference at state headquarters Nabanna said the recovery rate in the state has increased to over 70 per cent.

The CM on Thursday said the state will ramp up tests considering it as the only way to flatten the Covid-19 curve.

"We will test more because that is the only way we can reduce the cases," Banerjee said.

As of Aug 5, the eastern state has witnessed 83,800 total Covid-19 cases including 1,846 deaths.
