US educator conducts workshop in Kolkata school to help 'slow learners'

Kolkata, Apr 2 (IBNS) In a bid to raise the standard of education and inculcate among all students a harmonious development of personality that goes beyond the classroom teachings, Kolkata's St. Lawrence High School on Wednesday organised a workshop for its teachers where US-based educator Sumita Kaufhold showed them the ways to deal with slow learners.

The workshop was attended by 80 teachers of the school.

“We have back benchers in America too. We have them in every nation,” Kaufhold said while speaking in the workshop.

Kaufhold is an educationist and a community advocate on educational issues with over 30 years of experience. She has worked with the New York City Department for Education for 18 years, managing 30 schools and over 16,000 students.

Speaking about the workshop, she told IBNS: "The workshop conducted today was good and the teachers here were very dedicated. I can say that they were very good learners."

Kaufhold insisted teachers on telling stories to children and said: “Telling stories is a very important technique in the process of learning.”

She also asked the teachers to look after the students’ health.

She said, “Children cannot learn when they are hungry…We need them to have proteins. It will help them.”

Kaufhold spoke about the emotional factor associated with learning and said, “Emotion is a principle factor in learning. Emotion is linked to performance and attention.”

St. Lawrence High School recently completed its platinum jubilee year.
