Kolkata: Several iconic structures 'GoBlue' to mark World Children's Day

Several iconic structures like Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), Bidhan Sabha Bhavan (Assembly Building) and Press Club Kolkata have been lit up in blue to commemorate the World Children's Day on Wednesday.

The purpose of this illumination in blue light is to develop awareness about the rights of children among people, UNICEF said in a press release.

“These structures have been illuminated to send out a message requesting to uphold the rights of the children to their full potential of survival, development, protection and participation. We want everybody including parents, teachers, governments, civil societies to include the children’s opinions in their decision-making," Dr Monjur Hossain, Chief of UNICEF in West Bengal, said.

This year’s World Children's Day is being commemorated by UNICEF on the theme of 'Listen to the Future' and they organised meetings with children to learn the issues that affect their lives.

"The illumination is going to create curiosity and build awareness among people towards the critical importance of creating a world of peace, opportunity, equality, safety, dignity, inclusiveness, and happiness for every child," he said.

Dr Monjur urged people belonging to all walks of life to uphold the rights of children as they deserve to feel being included, celebrated, and protected against all forms of discrimination and deprivation.
