Community college students gear up for the US

Kolkata, June 23 (IBNS): Seven Indian students, who have been selected for the U.S. State Department funded Community College Initiative Program (CCIP), met with U.S. Consul General Helen LaFave in Kolkata on Monday.

Three students from Kolkata, and one each from Manipur, Siliguri, Guwahati and Ranchi have been selected for the CCIP.

Helen LaFave told the students: “Educational exchange programs are fundamental to the U.S.-India relationship. The Community College initiative is an extraordinary opportunity for young people who will spend a year in a community college in the United States.  I’m pleased to have had the chance to meet these participants and look forward to meeting them again once they are back to get feedback of their time in America.”

The current batch of seven students were joined by last year’s participants who gave them first-hand information on expectations and feedback of how this program has affected their lives and perceptions of themselves, the United States and their own communities.

The Community College Initiative Program, sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State, provides participants from selected countries with the opportunity to study for a year at community colleges in the United States.

Since the program’s inception in 2007, more than 2,100 students from 20 countries have received scholarships for study at community colleges throughout the United States.
