New Delhi/IBNS: In a big jump in daily cases, 2.47 lakh COVID-19 cases were reported from various states and union territories of India in the last 24 hours, as per the Union Health Ministry's Thursday data, keeping the weak health infrastructure of the country on its toes.

In the last 24 hours, the country has reported 2,47,417 new infections, the highest single day tally since May 2021 when elections were held in five states with little attention to COVID-19 protocols.

In the same span of time, 380 people died apparently due to the virus, whose positivity rate has shot up to 13.11%.

More than 84,000 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from medical facilities in the last one day, but the weight of the new positive cases has led the recovery percentage to plunge to 95.59%.

The Omicron cases, which are the added worry, have surged to 5,488 with its biggest pie being reported from the richest state, Maharashtra (1,367).

Though health experts claim the fatality rate in the third wave of COVID-19 is far less than in the earlier years, they continue to warn the various governments of serious crisis if the elections as well as religious congregations, the recent being in West Bengal, continue.
