India's active Covid-19 cases fall below 8-lakh mark: Health Ministry

New Delhi/IBNS: India's Health Ministry on Saturday stated the active Covid-19 cases in the country have fallen below the eight-lakh mark, though several parts of the country are staring at a possible surge in infections amid the festive season.

"India scales an unprecedented peak. Active cases drop below the 8-lakh mark for the first time in 1.5 months," the Health Ministry said.

For the last few days, India's daily cases have significantly dropped to somewhere between 60,000 and 70,000, in a relief for the country which has been severely battered by the contagion.

The 36 states and union territories registered 62,212 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours, as per government data released on Saturday.

With 837 deaths due to the virus reported in the same period, the Covid-19 toll has now touched 1,12,998.

Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said the next few months would be crucial in the fight against Covid-19 due to the festivals and winter season.

Harsh Vardhan had earlier said that 1.3 billion people in the country can expect Covid-19 vaccines from multiple sources in the early part of 2021.
