Covid-19 vaccine expected early next year: Health Minister Harsh Vardhan

New Delhi/IBNS: Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Tuesday said India, which is the second worst Covid-19-affected country in the world, is likely to have a vaccine against the virus in early 2021, media reports said.

Vardhan also said the country can expect vaccines from more than one source.

The Health Minister said as quoted by the media, "We're expecting that early next year, we should have vaccines in the country from maybe more than one source.

"Our expert groups are already formulating and devising strategies to plan on how to roll out the distribution of the vaccines in the country, who do we give the vaccine first and then of course we are strengthening  the cold chain facilities."

Four Coronavirus vaccine candidates are presently in advanced stages of pre-clinical trial.

India, the country with the highest number of cases in Asia, has piled up over 71.75 lakh infections so far.

Though the health ministry is fearing a massive spike in Covid-19 cases as the country is heading to the festive season, 28 states and union territories have reported a dip in daily cases on Tuesday.

In 24 hours between Monday and Tuesday mornings, the country has reported 55,342 new Covid-19 cases, the lowest number of daily new infections in nearly two months.
