Perspective with Parthiv: Harsh Neotia’s career after 45 holds a powerful lesson for entrepreneurs

Entrepreneur Harsh Neotia spoke about his decision to move beyond the cement business, where he spent decades, and experiment with ventures across real estate, hospitality, healthcare and education during a podcast conversation with his son, Parthiv.

Neotia shared insights into the diversity of his entrepreneurial journey in the latest episode of Perspectiv with Parthiv.

In an increasingly volatile business environment, the ability to reinvent oneself can itself become an entrepreneurial asset, Neotia said.

“Industry knowledge has a shelf life; the ability to evaluate people, assess risk, build partnerships and recognise an opportunity can travel much further,” he said.

The more interesting question, therefore, is not simply why Neotia moved across sectors, but what enabled him to do so at a stage of life when many professionals become increasingly invested in the identities and expertise they have already built.

The answer, as the conversation reveals, lies partly in perspective.

Starting again at 45 does not mean starting with the same uncertainty as a 25-year-old. The stakes may be higher, but so is the accumulated understanding of how businesses operate, Neotia said.

“Experience can impose caution, but it can also provide the confidence to navigate ambiguity,” he said.

For Neotia, the years after exiting the cement business became an exercise in applying that accumulated experience in new ways.

The father-son format makes the conversation particularly revealing. Parthiv is not merely interviewing his father about business milestones; he is also exploring the choices and turning points that have shaped the family's entrepreneurial journey.

The conversation creates space to examine the less visible dimensions of entrepreneurship — uncertainty, judgement, timing, risk-taking and the willingness to begin again.

There is a broader business lesson in Neotia's journey.

As careers become longer and industries evolve faster, reinvention may no longer be simply a mid-career exception. It can become a strategic capability. Entrepreneurs may increasingly need to move across sectors, business models and even professional identities as circumstances change.

Neotia's experience suggests that one of the most valuable assets accumulated over a career may not be ownership of a particular business or expertise in a particular industry. It may be the ability to recognise what remains useful when everything else changes.
