Centre extends import management system for laptops, IT hardware till Dec 31
New Delhi: The central government has extended the import management system for laptops and other IT hardware products by three months, now effective until December 31, 2024.
Companies will be required to seek fresh approvals for imports under new guidelines starting from January 1, 2025.
The current system, originally set to expire on September 30, was introduced on November 1, 2023, as part of an effort to promote domestic manufacturing, reduce reliance on imports—especially from China—and secure a trusted supply chain for electronics in India.
"Importers will need to apply for new authorizations for the period beginning January 1, 2025, with detailed guidelines to be issued shortly," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification.
The system governs the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers.
In August 2023, the government initially announced plans to require licenses for the import of IT hardware products.
However, after facing significant pushback from companies, industry groups, and trade partners, the government revised its approach.
A new "contactless" import management system was introduced in November 2023, allowing import permits to be issued entirely online.
The government has also indicated that import data will continue to be monitored closely before determining further steps for the system's progression.
