Will disqualify Chavan if found guilty: EC
"It is a clear cut case of paid news. In his election expenditure, total advertisement has been shown as less than Rs 6,000 which is impossible," Jatin Desai, a member of the Maharashtra Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (an Election Commission body), told CNN-IBN.
The EC has summoned Chavan to appear before it for a hearing on May 23 in connection with the paid news case against him.
On May 5, Chavan received a jolt when the Supreme Court ruled in the 2009 case that his poll expenses can be investigated by the Election Commission in the face of complaints of paid news.
The court said a candidate lying on his poll expenses can be disqualified too.
Chavan had challenged in court the authority of the Election Commission to probe his poll expenses.
The Supreme Court thus dismissed Chavan's petition seeking quashing of the Bombay High Court order which allowed the EC to probe his poll expenses after there were allegations of paid news.
The controversy dates back to 2009 when he had contested from Nanded.
Chavan, who faces allegations in the Adarsh housing scam, contested from Nanded again this time.
