'Weak and inflexible': Congress criticises Jaishankar's response to China's renaming Arunachal places

New Delhi: The Congress slammed External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday, describing his response to China's renaming places in Arunachal Pradesh as as 'weak and inflexible' .

Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here, senior Congress leader Manish Tewari said, “The EAM’s statement that if I change the name of your house, will that house become mine? Such a weak and inflexible response from the Foreign Minister over China’s cartographic aggression does not suit the Government of India."

He said, “China has changed the names of 30 places in Arunachal Pradesh and those who talk loudly about Katchatheevu Island are scared of even uttering the word China.”

Raising the Galwan issue, the former Union Minister said that it has almost been four years since the Chinese army intruded on the Indian borders, but still there has been no response from the Modi government.

He also alleged that in January 2023, the then SSP, Leh, presented a research paper at the annual conference of DGPs and IGPs, saying that out of 65 joint patrolling points, India did not have access to 26 and that these were under Chinese occupation.

Tewari said that despite the Opposition raising the matter on several occasions in Parliament, neither the Prime Minister nor the Foreign Minister uttered a single word about Chinese intrusion.

The Congress leader asked the government to tell the country how much land in India has been under Chinese control since May 2020 and why the government has not reclaimed it.
