In a post on X, Modi wrote: "The collapse of a building at Satya Niketan, Delhi is distressing. Condolences to those who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are working at the site and assisting those affected in the mishap."

At least three people were killed after the building collapsed, turning the area near Delhi University's South Campus into a rescue zone.

Rescue teams are working to pull out those trapped under the rubble, with several people still feared to be stuck beneath the debris.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the accident site and the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where the injured were undergoing treatment.

Gupta wrote on X: "Currently at the incident site in Satya Niketan, RK Puram, along with all concerned authorities, closely monitoring the rescue operation."

She said all agencies were working in coordination, with every effort focused on the safe rescue of those trapped.

"Relief and rescue operations are continuing on a war footing," Gupta said.

She also said she had obtained information from doctors at the AIIMS Trauma Centre about the treatment and health status of students injured in the "extremely tragic incident" in R.K. Puram.

"All students are under the supervision of AIIMS doctors, and their treatment is ongoing. Instructions have been given to the team of doctors to ensure every necessary medical assistance. The Delhi government is also in contact with their families," Gupta said.

Meanwhile, the building, which housed an establishment called Hostel Daze, was owned by a Gurgaon resident identified as Hari Om, sources told The Indian Express.

According to the newspaper, sources said ongoing renovation work and excavation of the basement may have weakened the building's foundations.

Satya Niketan is a popular residential PG accommodation hub for students of Delhi University's South Campus and several undergraduate colleges in the area.

At least one of the three deceased was a student, sources told the newspaper.
