New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress urged the Centre to appoint Samajwadi Party's Faizabad MP Awadhesh Prasad as Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha, reported India Today.

Awadhesh Prasad won the Lok Sabha elections from the Faizabad constituency, which includes Ayodhya.

So far, the Centre has not released the schedule for the election of the Deputy Speaker, a position that remained vacant during the 17th Lok Sabha.

The opposition has put forward a candidate with significant political and symbolic strength.

Awadhesh Prasad, a Dalit won the Faizabad election, a general seat, defeating BJP's Lallu Singh by more than 50,000 votes, drawing attention.

The opposition criticised the BJP for failing to secure the seat despite inaugurating the Ram Temple.

The Deputy Speaker holds the same legislative powers as the Speaker and assumes administrative responsibilities in the Speaker's absence due to death, illness, or other reasons.

It is a parliamentary tradition to elect a Deputy Speaker from a party other than the ruling party to ensure a balanced and accountable democratic parliament.
