Thane/UNI: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has ordered a refund of Rs 27 lakh to COVID-19 patients, which was taken by private hospitals.

The civic body issued the order taking note of multiple complaints over excess bills charged by the private hospitals.

"TMC Commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma had ordered an audit of nearly 15  private hospitals. This order was the result of the preliminary round of audit and many more rounds are yet to follow,"  the TMC said in an official statement.

A team headed by the chief Auditor, detected as many as 196 cases where the excess billing to the tune of Rs 27 lakhs had been done by the hospitals.

A total of 1752 payments from 15 Covid hospitals, which they had received so far, were inspected.

Of this, 486 payments were investigated by a team and a total of 196 objectionable payments were registered. The total amount of 196 objectionable payments is more than Rs 27 lakh.

The hospitals were ordered to give details of the payments received and after their submission, the refund was ordered.

In case of non-compliance with the order, hospitals will face action from the TMC, a senior officer of the corporation said.
