SC issues notice to Centre and Maharashtra govt on plea seeking CBI probe in Palghar lynching case

New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court Thursday issued a notice to the Centre and Maharashtra government on a petition seeking transfer of Palghar lynching case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the claims that it is not possible for the Maharashtra CID to conduct a "free and fair" probe in the case, said a media report.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, in a hearing through videoconferencing, took note of the plea, filed by the seers of ‘Shri Panch Dashban Juna Akhara’ and the relatives of the deceased sadhus, alleging bias in the ongoing probe conducted by Maharashtra police, reported Indian Express.

The other plea seeking the transfer of the case to NIA has been filed by Ghanshyam Upadhyay, the report added.

Earlier, the apex court had directed the state government to submit the status report on investigation in the Palghar incident.

Two sadhus and their driver were lynched on the night of April 16 in Palghar.

According to police, the victims were residents of Kandivali in Mumbai and were travelling in a Ford Ecosport to Silvassa to attend a funeral.

The trio, including a 70-year-old sadhu, was attacked by a mob  in Gadchinchile village on the night of April 16 in the presence of police.

The victims were identified as Sushil Giri Maharaj (35), Nilesh Telgane (35), the driver of the car they were travelling in, and Chikane Maharaj Kalpavrikshgiri (70).

At least 110 people have been arrested in connection with the lynching of the three men.
